This August, Governor Jerry Brown signed into law Assembly Bill 2159, which impacts the rights of undocumented immigrants in court. The bill provides that, in civil actions for personal injury or wrongful death, evidence of a person’s immigration status will no longer be admissible and disco
very of a person’s immigration status will not be permitted.
The legislature will soon address a number of bills that may impact you:
· AB 2337: if passed, the bill will require employers to inform employees of their rights under existing California law to take time off from work if they have been victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking.
· AB 2895: this bill is designed to require employers to make available for inspection a complete, updated copy of an injury prevention program at each worksite with 3 or more employees.
· SB 1063: this bill seeks to expand California’s Equal Pay act to include race and ethnicity-related wage differentials.
· AB 67: if passed, the bill will mandate double pay for work performed on Thanksgiving.
Beginning January 1, 2017, employers with 10 or more employees will be required to submit electronically to the Employment Development Department all employment tax returns, wage reports, and payroll tax deposits. This requirement will apply to all employers beginning to January 1, 2018.
